Papier Mâché Table Top Cabinet  c.1860 English. Inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl and overpainted. SOLD

This wonderful cabinet was produced using pioneering techniques developed in the Midlands during the 1850s. The manufacture compressed the papier mâché so that the fabric became very strong and durable.  The body was then painted, inset with Mother-of-Pearl and abalone shell, painted decoration applied and finally lacquered for protection and shine.

A fine piece with interior fitted with drawers and a compartment containing a writing slope. Lid lifts to reveal a lady's workbox. An immensely decorative and functional piece produced with great skill.
