Papier Mâché 'parrot' box
c.1860 English
Dimensions: height,10cm; length, 25cm. £250
An engaging piece with an unusual subject: a pair of parrots watching over a nest of eggs, surrounded by woodland flowers. The flowers are English, while of course the parrots are not native to the British Isles: an interesting blend of local and exotic! Although now the Indian parakeets are widespread in the South of England, perhaps not quite so foreign to us in the 21st Century. (Reference: PM parrot box)
Condition: There has been restoration around the hinges to the back, but otherwise in very good condition. A new silk base has been added to the interior, this can be removed to reveal the original lining. Lining to the lid is entirely original.
